This dish combines delicate tilapia fillet with a rich white miso sauce, served with crisp bok choy and an exciting upside-down rice bowl that is sure to impress.
Ingredients (for 2)
- Tilapia fillet - 1 lb
- White miso paste - 2 tbsp
- Soy sauce - 1 tbsp
- Mirin - 1 tbsp
- Honey - 1 tbsp
- Rice vinegar - 1 tbsp
- Vegetable oil - 2 tbsp
- Fresh ginger - 1 tsp - minced
- Cloves garlic - 1 tsp - minced
- Baby bok choy - 2 - halved lengthwise
- Short-grain rice - 1 cup - cooked
- Green onions - 1 tbsp - sliced
- Sesame seeds - 1 tsp
- Salt - - to taste
- Black pepper - - to taste
Preparation

Step 1 - π₯π¦π―In a small bowl, mix white miso paste, soy sauce, mirin, honey, and rice vinegar together.

Step 2 - π³π§π§βπ³Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a small pan. Add minced ginger and garlic and cook until fragrant.

Step 3 - π₯πβ³Add the miso sauce mix to the pan and whisk together until it starts to bubble and thicken, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4 - π§ππ§Season tilapia fillet with salt and pepper on both sides.

Step 5 - π³ππ₯Using the same pan used for the miso sauce, sear tilapia fillet until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side. When finished, remove from pan and keep warm.

Step 6 - πΏπͺ΄πΆοΈUsing the same pan again, arrange halved bok choy in a single layer. Cook until the leaves are wilted and the stems are slightly charred, about 2 minutes on each side. Remove from pan when done.

Step 7 - ππ₯£π§In a bowl, press 1 cup of cooked short-grain rice firmly into the bottom of the bowl. Turn the bowl over onto a plate and gently lift the bowl off, leaving a beautiful mound of upside-down rice.

Step 8 - π²π½οΈπPlace the seared tilapia fillet on top of the rice, then arrange bok choy around it. Drizzle the warm miso sauce over the tilapia fillet and around the plate. Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds over the dish and serve immediately.
Additional
For a gluten-free option, use tamari instead of soy sauce. This dish also works well with other types of fish, such as salmon or black cod. Kids can help by pressing the rice into the bowl and sprinkling the green onions and sesame seeds over the finished dish.
