A bold and vibrant fusion of sweet and savory, our Cajun Blackberry Trifle showcases the not-so-classic-but-delicious combination of spicy biscuits layered with tangy blackberry compote and a smooth creole cream. This dessert is a flavorful adventure that will dazzle your taste buds.
Ingredients (for 4)
- Blackberries - 2 cups - reserve some for topping
- Sugar - 1 cup - divided
- Water - 1/4 cup - none
- Heavy cream - 2 cups - none
- Vanilla extract - 1 tsp - none
- Ground cinnamon - 1/2 tsp - none
- Ground nutmeg - 1/4 tsp - none
- Ground clove - 1 pinch - none
- Spicy cajun biscuits - 8 - crumbled
- Powdered sugar - 1 tbsp - for dusting
Preparation
-
Step 1 - 🍇🍯🔥Combine blackberries, 1/2 cup of sugar, and water into a saucepan. Over medium heat, let it simmer until berries break down and the syrup thickens, creating a compote. Once done, allow it to cool.
-
Step 2 - 🥣🍦🌶️In a bowl, beat heavy cream with the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar and the spices (vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove) until it forms soft peaks. This is your creole cream.
-
Step 3 - 🍪🍓🥛Begin assembling the trifle by layering crumbled spicy biscuits at the bottom of the dish. This is followed by a generous spoonful of both the blackberry compote and the creole cream layer.
-
Step 4 - 🔁🥄🍰Continue layering using all components (spicy biscuits, blackberry compote, creole cream), making sure to end with a creole cream layer on top.
-
Step 5 - 🍓🍚❄️Top the trifle with some reserved blackberries and dust it with powdered sugar. Allow it to chill for around 2 hours before serving.
Additional
This Cajun Blackberry Trifle can be made even more unique with an addition of a splash of bourbon in the blackberry compote to provide a deeper, more complex flavor. You can also make a kid-friendly version by substituting Cajun biscuits with regular ones. They'll love helping with the trifle layering!
