A little about this dish

This Father's Day, we're going all out with a classic grilling staple that's been given a gourmet upgrade - the humble hamburger! Our key ingredients are premium ground sirloin beef for juiciness, and a rainbow of colorful toppings for a visual feast.

Ingredients (for 4)

  • Ground sirloin beef1.5 lb
  • Brioche buns4
  • Slices of cheddar cheese4
  • Arugula1 cup
  • Large red tomatoes2sliced thick for grilling
  • Large red onion1thinly sliced
  • Head of iceberg lettuce1washed and divided into large leaves
  • Balsamic vinegar2 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil, salt, and pepperto taste

Preparation

  1. Step 1 — 🔪🧅🍳
Start by caramelizing your onions. Add thinly sliced onions with a drizzle of olive oil into a pan over medium heat. Stir occasionally.
  2. Step 2 — 🔥🍯🍷
After 10 minutes, add the balsamic vinegar and brown sugar to the onions. Lower the heat and let it continue to caramelize for another 15 minutes.
  3. Step 3 — 🥩🍔🧂
While onions are caramelizing, form the ground sirloin into 4, evenly-sized burger patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Step 4 — 🍔🧀🔥
Grill the patties on a preheated BBQ for about 5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness. Add a slice of cheddar on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking so it starts to melt.
  5. Step 5 — 🍅🔥🧂
Grill the tomato slices for a couple of minutes on each side. Season with a bit of salt and pepper.
  6. Step 6 — 🍔🥬🍅
Assemble your burgers: Start with a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, follow with the cheese-topped patty, a spoonful of caramelized onions, some grilled tomatoes, a handful of arugula, and finally the top bun. Enjoy your decadent Father's Day feast!

A final fox tip

Did you know the hamburger, despite its name, originated in Hamburg, Germany? The 'Hamburg steak' was brought to America by German immigrants. Also, for a fun family activity, you can have the kids create their own custom toppings bar to add extra colors to your Father's Day Rainbow Burgers.
