This BBQ recipe is inspired by the popular Chinese Char Siu dish, but with a seasonal twist. We'll be using pork belly, a winter staple, and grilling it to perfection. The marinade includes honey, soy sauce, and apple cider vinegar to create a balance of sweet and sour flavors.
Ingredients (for 2)
- Pork belly - 1 lb - sliced into 1/2 inch pieces
- Garlic cloves - 2 - minced
- Honey - 2 tbsp
- Soy sauce - 2 tbsp
- Hoisin sauce - 1 tbsp
- Apple cider vinegar - 1/4 cup
- Chinese five spice - 1 tsp
- Cornstarch - 1 tsp
- Oil - 1 tbsp
- Salt - to taste
- Pepper - to taste
Preparation

Step 1 - 🥡🧄🐝Mix garlic, honey, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, apple cider vinegar, Chinese five spice, cornstarch, salt and pepper together in a bowl.

Step 2 - 🐖🛁🌡️Add sliced pork belly to the marinade, toss to evenly coat, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Step 3 - 🔥🌡️📈Heat an outdoor grill to medium-high heat and oil the grill grates.

Step 4 - 🐖🍢🔥Place pork belly slices on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until browned and caramelized.

Step 5 - 🛌🔪🐖Remove pork belly from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly.

Step 6 - 🍽️🐖🍚Serve sliced pork belly with stir-fried bok choy and steamed jasmine rice.
Additional
For a spicier variation, add some chili flakes into the marinade. This dish is best cooked outdoors but can also be done on a grill pan indoors. The marinade can also be used for other proteins like chicken or tofu.
